8 Fun Ideas To Spice Up A Long Distance Relationship And Make It Work

long-distance relationship

In this millennial lifestyle, I think a long-distance relationship is an effective way to find out if the bond can last forever. It’s incredible if you can trust, respect, be patient, have fun, and love each other from a distance. You’d rock the world when finally together!

You may be gone from my sight, but you are never gone from my heart.

Ankur and I live in two different countries (France and USA) with absolutely a nightmare of time zones so we know it’s not a cakewalk to make a long-distance relationship work. Despite the distance and it’s complexities, that special someone makes this wait worthwhile. But, while we wait, we might as well have some fun! 😀

For obvious reasons, long-distance relationships activities are a tad bit different from the conventional ‘dating’ concept – It’s not the simple coffee/dinner dates or the in the moment long drives or even doing the simplest day-to-day activities together.

So, here are some fun ideas and activities that we have been trying to spice things up a little every now and then in our long-distance relationship:

Here’s a handy checklist that you can pin or print for later!

1. The Classic Date Night

Ever tried dressing up and decking up to just sit at home for a virtual date night? And, YES date nights are possible even if you are miles away from each other and it’s rather fun and interesting in its own way *speaking out of experience*.

Cook each others’ favorite dish or snack, put on that Ed Sheeran music if you like, and press that video call button. It’s the closest possible thing to being in person with your main….’Keepin’ it Real!

2. Netflix Party

We belong to the ‘Netflix and Chill’ epoch. Who wouldn’t like watching a movie or show together along with some popcorn! Netflix Party makes this possible even for couples in long-distance relationships!

We stream Netflix at the same time without the whole ‘trying to be in sync’ issue which is common when playing something specific on two different devices. We also like the side chat window where we can discuss/comment as we are watching or just talking silly. 😀

3. Take The Viral Couple Challenge

Talk about Silly…we can’t miss TikTok, the new sensation! 😀 Take up those random challenges, be silly and gear up your drama quotients! We managed to take up the plank challenge, cute couple challenge and few dance challenges in the last month.

It’s a crazy fun way to spend time… sometimes leading to bouts of laughter. Also, being silly helps getting comfortable with your BAE if you have started off with a long distance relationship.

4. Play Games Online

Let’s bring out the competitive monsters in us because it’s GAME TIME 😈. While we can always play a simple board game on video call like Scrabble, there are several online apps and sites that make our lives easier.

There are numerous options based on the kind of games you would prefer. We enjoy the simple ones like Jackbox Games (Drawful is our favourite), Ludo King (the good old), Word with Friends (similar to Scrabble), Poker Face (can interact like in a video call) and Minecraft. You can also play slightly more intense ones like Fifa, Call Of Duty, Fortnite, etc.

We find these games really engaging and a brilliant way to spend time with each other!

5. You’ve Got Mail

Who doesn’t like a sweet surprise gift out of nowhere!! That feeling when you get a message saying ‘You’ve got Mail’ when you least expect it, can bring out the biggest smile and the sense of special feeling in your significant other.

It need not be very expensive or extravagant gifts (although I won’t mind) … a flower or a hand made card or a well thought of personalized gift is all that really matters. A surprise visit or even better a surprise proposal is guaranteed to blow your partner’s mind.

6. Cooking With Love

Lets Bake someone Happy! 😉 Try making something new for each other (try a new recipe probably)…. it could be as simple as even a smoothie or baking a cake/cookies, or do the whole shebang and prepare a fancy meal if you’d like.

And as a token of appreciation you win that ‘Kiss the Cook‘ opportunity! 😘 Haha

7. Plan Your Next Vacation

Couples in long-distance relationship have one major thing in common…that’s the urge to plan the next visit just to make that goodbye a little easier.

If you have the travel bug in you and enjoy exploring countries/cities together (like most of us do), it is time to chalk out your next holiday!! We find it fun to make the list of places to see, where to stay, things to do, what to shop, etc. It’s a nice opportunity to learn a little more about your partner and their preferences.

8. Meet Your Partner At Shop O’clock!

This is one fun activity for all the shopaholics out there! Pick out clothes for each other, try some new styles and ramp up that wardrobe. It’s a treat getting spoilt and pampered by your partner.

But, beware you have been warned! Below is an illustration from first month of our relationship… lol

Long Distance Relationships can be tough and seem like it’s fading, but we believe these are some activities that can help a long-distance relationship work.

With time, these ideas come naturally to you and get you more involved with your partner. The key is to communicate with your partner and make an effort to nurture your relationship.

My wife and I have had experienced being long distance on several occasions during my time in the military. I wish we had done things like this more often, but I’m sure we will experience times like these again and will be able to use these awesome ideas.

Nice. I considered getting in an open relationship once but didn’t really know how to go about it. Would these tips work best on a couple that originally met in person and then became long distance? Or a couple that met long distance with the plan to meet in person when the timing works?

2 and 3 sounds like fun. Especially the #dontrushchallenge
